Now that we're all caught up in the frenzy of National Novel Writing Month, it's good to have an occasional laugh or two. I got a good one yesterday when I checked my horoscope and found this:

"You may have a clear idea where you are going today, but your plan to get there may be flawed with faulty logic or incorrect information. Luckily, you have the means to overcome poor reasoning if you are willing to trust your intuition. Don't worry about the details now; just be flexible and play it by ear as you progress through the day. You might not be able to justify your unusual strategy, but you will certainly increase your chances for success."

It seems to be describing the NaNo experience perfectly ... flawed with faulty logic ... incorrect information ... and most importantly of all, a willingness to trust one's intuition.

Write on, NaNoWriMo's!

It's November 1 which means that "NaNoWriMo" -- National Novel Writing Month -- is officially underway. Like many other writers, I lined up at the starting gate precisely at midnight, eager to begin a new romance. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to turn back the clock and gain an extra hour.

I haven't updated my word count on the official site yet, but I'll head that way and do it soon. For now, I just wanted to post a short note to recognize the official start of this momentous event.

I'm there -- Christina Cole -- so if you're participating in NaNo, be sure to add me as a buddy.

Good luck with your novels!

Jennifer knows nothing about fortune-telling,
but when she agrees to help out at a Halloween fund-raiser,
she finds out what her future holds.

Be sure to visit LASR!

The Daily Writer

While browsing around Barnes & Noble this weekend, I came across a great addition to any writer's library. It's a book titled The Daily Writer, by Fred White. The sub-title is 366 meditations to cultivate a productive and meaningful writing life.

Yep, that's right. 366 daily meditations/prompts to get your day going. I've always had fun doing little prompts or what I sometimes call "Silly Writing" -- just putting together random ideas and letting my imagination run wild with it. It's what I think of as "priming the pump". Another way to look at it is as a form of "stretching exercises" to warm-up with before getting down to serious running.

The prompts in the book are interesting and thoughtful. Today's meditation topic is "On Inspiration" ... something every writer needs to reflect upon from time to time.

Price for the book is $17.99 US, and I consider it well worth the money. The next time you're browsing through your favorite bookstore, take a look at The Daily Writer.

A Cranky Muse

Although I love Dickins, my playful muse, right now he's being decidedly difficult. He's been whining and complaining because I've been insisting on working on my historical romance novel instead of letting him play around with new stories. He's bored with "The Wrong Woman" and is chomping at the bit, wanting to work on one of the other projects he's added to my list of things-to-do. All in good time, Dickins, all in good time!

To appease him tonight, I let him help me add another "Tips for Telling Stories" page to the website. This page is all about the four basic story-telling premises used in romantic fiction. It's a bit tricky to get to the page, though. First, click on "Tips for Telling Stories", then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "More Tips for Telling Stores". Finally, scroll to the bottom of that page, and click the link you'll find there for the "Four Basic Story Premises".

Or, you can click the links provided in this post. Happy writing!

Love Songs and Brain Worms

Sometimes I wish I'd never named this blog "Falling in Love with Love". Every time I come here to post, that song starts playing through my head and turns into an annoying "brain worm" that won't go away. For those of you who may never have heard the song "Falling in Love with Love", the words go like this:

Falling in love with love is falling for make-believe
Falling in love with love is playing the fool
Caring too much is such a juvenile fancy
Learning to trust is just for children in school

I fell in love with love one night when the moon was full
I was unwise with eyes unable to see
I fell in love with love ... with love everlasting
But love fell out with me.

Now ... how to rid my brain of the worm! I'm attempting to switch over to another tune. Something about having enough of silly love songs. Wish me luck!

More Tips on Telling Stories

One of the questions I often hear is "How do you come up with ideas?" That question usually comes from friends who aren't writers. Writers know where and how to come up with ideas. The question I usually hear from other writers is "How do you turn your ideas into stories?" We each have our own ways of going about that process, of course. But sometimes it's helpful to know how other writers approach the process.

In the last week, I've written three short stories, each one different, yet each one reflecting my light-hearted, humorous outlook on falling in love. One is a story of young love just beginning, another is a story of fixing up a love-gone-wrong, and the newest -- one I wrote earlier this evening -- is about meeting the right person at just the right time.

As I've written these stories, I've tried to make mental notes of the step-by-step process I've followed. Where did the idea come from? What decisions did I make? How did I get from idea to story? The answers are in a new page I've added to the site: More Tips on Telling Stories. You'll find the link at the bottom of the "Tips on Telling Stories" page.
